How to Get to Heaven From Pittsburgh Part 3

Now comes the good news. (Did you know that the Greek word that we translate as gospel literally means "good news"?) God knows our nature and our inability to achieve the perfection He requires. So He created a plan where He Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ, came to earth, lived the perfect life that we couldn't and then died on the cross as a substitute for us. On the cross, Jesus took upon Himself all the sins of the world, and paid the penalty for them. Three days after being buried, He rose from the dead! By believing in Him (having faith) and accepting the death He died on our behalf, you can have peace with God. And just as God raised Jesus from the dead, you have a new life when you accept Him. It's a "do-over" for your life. No matter what you've done, God's mercy and forgiveness are available for you. The slate is wiped perfectly clean and you begin to live a new life empowered by God's Spirit. The Bible refers to it as being "born again". By grace (totally unmerited favor), God decided to forgive us and adopt us as His children. Salvation is a gift. We can't earn it, we accept it. We accept Him!

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2)

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
